Akron teams with Pokemon Go to encourage downtown exploration Aug. 26-27

AKRON, Ohio -- Residents, visitors and University of Akron students are encouraged to explore downtown Akron on Aug. 27 and 27 using the augmented-reality experience of Pokemon Go.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation teamed up with Niantic, Inc., Pokemon Go's developer and publisher, to help build connections between local players during the university's freshman orientation period.

New Roo Weekend takes place Aug. 26 and 27 just before classes begin for the fall semester.

The two-day event will feature programming to bridge the gap between the virtual and physical worlds and explore how public places can foster connections between people.

Niantic, Inc. and the Knight Foundation announced a multiyear commitment to promote civic engagement in communities across the United States.

The two organizations will support efforts to get citizens outside and explore their towns through city-organized events.

"The Knight Foundation, University of Akron and Downtown Akron Partnership have helped to curate a Pokemon Go experience in Akron that will give attendees an opportunity to explore the city like never before with fellow students and local residents," Vikram Grover, senior director of business development at Niantic, Inc., said in a news release.

During the downtown Akron weekend event, public spaces will include charging stations and seating, as well as live music and activities.

A variety of programming includes drawing sessions, vendor areas, walking tours, photo opportunities and a social media scavenger hunt.

The event will encourage Pokemon Go players to participate in other activities planned in downtown Akron that weekend, including free admission to Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival's Saturday-night performance of Victor Provost: The "Bright Eyes" Project and Joey DeFrancesco at Lock 3.
